This comes up off and on again in other spheres but I’m going to just throw this out there for the five people who actually read my tumblr regularly:
I do not tolerate racism, homophobia, or sexism.
But since this is specifically a problem lately: I DO NOT TOLERATE homophobia. At all. In any form. It pisses me off because homophobia has brought actual physical and emotional harm to people that I love.
I will not tolerate trans-phobia and hate towards transexuals. I’ve got a long way to go when it comes to making sure my language is properly inclusive and that I use the right pronouns all the time, so I hope people will forgive my mistakes, but I’m trying. Please feel free to (gently) point out my mistakes in that regard. It’s unlearning 30 years of stuff, takes time.
This is just making me so angry lately. There aren’t words for how mad it makes me that people think we should actually be tolerant of their intolerance.
Well I won’t do it. If you’re intolerant and think that gay people are anything less than every other human being for any reason or explanation that you can come up with, then I’m going to tell you that you’re wrong. You’re wrong, you’re stupid, and you’re probably misinterpreting whatever you’re using for your excuse, ESPECIALLY if you’re a Christian.
I can’t even write about this anymore, it makes me so mad. Because the particular situation that keeps bringing this up is outside of my sphere enough that I can’t do anything particular about it. Nobody has said anything to me about it so I can’t get out my soapbox. So I put it here.
For the most part, I give people a bit of leeway in the “maybe they just don’t know” category. I let everybody have ONE stupid “teaching moment” where they can get taken aside and somebody explains that they are being offensive, and stupid, and no matter what they think THEY ARE HURTING OTHER PEOPLE.
I do this because there are a few cases where I needed that talk. Where I didn’t understand. I had to have my own privilege explained to me a couple times. So I let people have just that much space.
But if you continue after somebody looks at you and says “ME, you are hurting ME and I need you to stop” and you argue with them that they aren’t being tolerant of your beliefs or that they can’t take a joke?
Forget you man, you’re a bigot and that won’t change that until you change.
